Level 3 Personal Trainer (online)

The YMCA Awards Level 3 Personal Training Certificate is the qualification for anyone wishing to become a personal trainer and provides access onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 3. 

Course Information
By the end of this course you will be able to;
  • work unsupervised as a personal trainer, 
  • offer one to one training, carry out baseline assessments, 
  • provide nutritional advice; and ;
  • provide progressive programming specific to the needs of the client.

This is an online learning course, so includes elements of home study and online e-learning with the opportunity to meet with a tutor/assessor for practical input prior to completing the practical assessment. The course can be started at anytime.

Entry Requirements
A suitable Level 2 qualification in Gym Instructing. The role of a Personal Trainer requires a degree of physical fitness. Click here if you do not have a Level 2 Gym Qualification.

Course Content
Unit 1 - Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health - studied at home via online e-learning (25-40 hours) and assessed via a multiple choice exam*

Unit 2 - Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme - studied at home via online e-learning (25-40 hours) and assessed via a multiple choice exam*, written knowledge questions, and a written case study.

Unit 3 - Programming personal training with clients - studied at home via online e-learning and assessed via completion of written knowledge questions, a written personal training programme to include:
  • client profile
  • physical measurements
  • goal setting
  • client testimony
  • programme cards (for 4 detailed sessions)
  • 12 week programme overview
  • client evaluations
  • goals review

Unit 4 - Delivering personal training sessions - studied at home via online e-learning and assessed via written knowledge questions, programme cards, a practical assessment** and self-evaluation.

You must also complete the below Level 2 mandatory units if your Level 2 Gym/ETM was acheived more than 4 years ago (an extra £50 is payable if you need to complete these Level 2 units).
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity - studied at home and assessed via completion of a worksheet
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment - studied at home and assessed via completion of a worksheet
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health - studied at home and assessed via a multiple choice exam*

* In order to complete your theory assessments, you would need to complete and submit the 'book an assessment' form, where you can choose from the available dates at our exam approved centres.

** In the final practical assessment you will be assessed teaching a variety of PT training methods to a client. This assessment will last approximately 45 minutes and will be observed directly or via DVD by one of our assessors.
